Story
From the company Elecrow, for the purposes of this review, we received one of four models of the new Elecrow CrowPanel ESP32 E-Paper black and white screens in the size 5.79″. The dimensions of this screen are 47.74 x 139.00 mm and have a resolution of 272 x 792 pixels. The spot dimensions are therefore 0.1755 x 0.1755 mm. This panel is in the form of a strip and is ideal for displaying a large number of data, such as those on a meteorological display, or larger linear data, such as a table with the name and surname of a business panel participant.
The screen is matte and does not reflect light, making it easy to read outside. The ratio of white to black is so pronounced that no background lighting is required under conditions of normal optical brightness that enables reading from paper. The display is controlled via the SPI interface by an Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8R8 module running at 240 MHz. The module has 8 MB of PSRAM and 8 MB of Flash memory. ESP32-S3 is a very common processor in a large number of maker devices, from, say, the Banana Pi Centi-S3 screen, through the interesting industrial Lilygo T-RS S3 and T-Connect RS232/485 modules, to the popular Seeed Studio Xiao ESP32S3 development system. This means that the software support is excellent and you will easily find a large number of examples for developing your own applications. In that case, you will need to have more GPIO lines available - and the CrowPanel E-Ink HMI display has as many as twelve of them.
The bottom line is that the entire Elecrow CrowPanel ESP32 E-Paper HMI Display series is purpose-built for specific uses: either signage or information. Due to its dimensions, it is not intended to be a book reader, which is usually what E-Paper screens tend to be. We like this targeted application idea and can certainly recommend any of these four models if you need information tags, price tags, table identification tags or those that you would wear on clothes. There are many applications where these specialized wireless E-Paper displays can take advantage of their two great advantages: low power consumption and long-lasting battery life and the ability to update the display wirelessly.
